VICENZAORO, the largest show in Europe for gold and jewellery, takes place each year in September and January. In the birthplace of Italian jewellery, this show brings together more than 1500 brands from more than 30 different countries. The theme of the September 2018 edition was Innovation: from
3D software design to digital technologies.
We took the opportunity to interview Mina El Hadraoui, brand director for Gringoire Joaillier. At Vicenzaoro, the French Art Deco jewellery house was exhibiting its latest collections made in collaboration with the Russian lapidary Victor Tuzlukov who developed new and innovative gem cuts specially for the Parisian jeweller.
Gringoire Joaillier, innovation at the heart of new creations
Where did the idea of the GEM collection come from?
Our main goal is to always fully represent what we are: a French, Parisian and innovative brand. We wanted a strong collection in terms of image, innovation and also a collection that represented our identity. Innovation has always been present ever since the brand’s creation. It’s an obvious choice with the GEM collection.
How did you meet Victor Tuzlukov?
We met at the Shenzhen show almost four years ago. Victor Tuzlukov showed us Tahitian pearls which were cut in a very original way: they looked like mirror balls, stunning! Mr. Pranda and I have great respect for craftsmanship and so we were both captivated by Victor’s wonderful work.
How was the collaboration with the Russian lapidary?
We started by sharing our viewpoints about different topics. I needed to understand his artistic approach. Victor is not only a lapidary and an exceptional gem cutter, he is an artist, a poet. For him, each stone captures the human soul and reflects the universe in its many facets. We took the time to find the right combination to respect his work but also our identity. After many meetings, the animal theme seemed like an obvious starting point.
So you chose the theme before creating the stone cutting, and not the other way around?
Exactly, we started from a somewhat philosophical floral and animal inspiration and then determined more specific themes, each one perfectly corresponding to our brand identity. The lion represents the strength to show who we are and to wear jewellery that reflects our personality. For Victor, it is also the majesty, the supreme being and the humility. That’s why we have some pieces that are very “show off” and at the same time jewels like this pendant that I can wear easily with jeans and a t-shirt!
How did you proceed, from the gem to the new collections?
For some of the jewellery lines, such as the KING collection, I chose to collaborate with talented designers like Camille Toupet. We drew inspiration from the 30s and the Art Deco style for the design. Always respecting our identity, this rich and creative artistic period is also a key moment in the history of Gringoire Joaillier: actually the most prosperous years for the jeweller. It resulted in an outstandingly feminine collection. Camille has designed a line that brilliantly enhances each stone in a very elegant way.
Gringoire Joaillier, affordable jewellery
What is the price range for the King collection?
Our access price is under € 1,500. We are faithful to the principles of the brand to make jewellery affordable to all women.
The KING collection appeals to a woman of strong character, what about the ROSE collection?
By creating the ROSE collection we wanted to express the sensitivity and the softness of a delicate, graceful and poetic jewellery line. Faceted according to an innovative geometric design, it subtly represents a blooming rose. With an imposing pink amethyst from France or a majestic green quartz, surrounded by diamonds, it is much more than a classic line, it’s a delight of Art Deco and floral inspiration.
Tell us about the CELEBRATION line?
For this collection, we drew our inspiration from Victor Tuzlukov’s very cubic and “faceted” cut. The gem is so beautiful that there is nothing to add. A very simple design, not too much going on around the center stone so that its beauty fully expresses itself.
With the GALAXY line, it seems you wanted more outstanding pieces…
Indeed, this collection includes exceptional jewels, even though it was not the initial idea. We added some texture with a row of diamonds on the edge of the ring: the right balance for perfect cohesion and movement.
King, Rose, Celebration, Galaxy… and what about Lotus?
The Lotus is the philosophical facet added to the collection by Victor, he is particularly mindful of the inner self and respect for others. Humane relationships are essential to him. This collaboration would not exist if we didn’t share common values.
