Contribution to Honoré Magazine #5 – Art Watches SIHH

Last year, following the S.I.H.H. 2017, I wrote an article for L’Honoré Magazine, a magazine dedicated to the art of living and French luxury, on the art watches then presented during this show. Inspired and inspiring, the S.I.H.H. shines with its Métiers d’Art featuring fabulous work. I suggest you discover this article for which I had a lot of fun writing. These art watches remain timeless. Van Cleef & Arpels poetic art watches Watchmaking  firms are riding high in the firmament, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and priceless talent, and striving to achieve ever more sophisticated results. The art professions known in French as métiers d’art are the prerogative of jewellery watchmakers – and make up a niche all their own in the world if fine watchmaking. This year, Van Cleef & Arpels has produced one of the masterworks in this field with an extraordinary item that’s a piece of temporal poetry: a painstakingly crafted table automaton, featuring a delicate, graceful fairy nymph, her head sculpted in aquamarine, watching a butterfly adorned with diamonds and opals escape from a …

An Exercise in Style, by Van Cleef & Arpels

An Exercise in Style, a poetic and successful one for two centenarian Parisians. Fruit of a poetic encounter between the high jewellery Maison Van Cleef  & Arpels and the prestigious prestigieuse Gallimard Publishing House this coffee table book describes words, stones and metal for a literary and visual promenade.   This tasty and charming book that you go through with you best girlfriends or alone coiled in you couch sipping tea, is a feminine format book that you leaf through page by page taking your time to savour each detail… Thrilled by so much beauty and intelligence, I could not refrain from telling you about it. Indeed, because each page is surprising and interesting in both the approach and the artistic and creative research. Drawings, images, text, mathematical formula… Every detail is polished and crafted like a high jewellery piece. Twenty-five words dear to the heart of the jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels have been carefully chosen, defined and then described by a writer I envy, illustrated by an expert hand, taking us into the imaginary world …

Do not miss this exhibition, a pure delight for the eyes. Van Cleef & Arpels has a few surprises in store for you with this collection composed exclusively of animal clips, highlighting the codes and stones dear to the house. A Noah’s Ark which brings to life real and imaginary animals. Such as this unicorn, a wonderful creature represented in the 1940s by the Maison and whose volume is underlined thanks to the Mystery Set™, an emblematic technique patented in 1933 by the Maison to set the stones without the metal being visible. …

SIHH 2016: an amazing moment

This year I was lucky enough to be invited to the SIHH! Okay, awesome, but what is the SIHH? SIHH is the acronym for  Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, it’s the International Exhibition for Fine Watchmaking which takes place every year in Geneva in January. It is a BtoB (Business to Business) event organised for the jewellery and watch brands (15 of them) of the RICHEMONT group by the RICHEMONT group, thus inviting visitors (14,500) and selected journalists (1200) from around the world . Indeed, at this occasion, the novelties of each brand are presented. The stakes are great and decisive for the year ahead. I’m grateful for this opportunity to attend the show for the first time and I confess it has been four days of awe-inspiring discoveries being faced to so much beauty and know-how in such a short time. For this 2016 edition, RICHEMONT has innovated and invited 9 independent watchmakers with incredible know-how and techniques, a space named Carré des horlogers was specially dedicated. I discovered for instance the know-how …

TAJAN jewellery auction: interview with the Expert!

The TAJAN auction sale for jewellery and watches will take place on 13 and 14 December at the Tajan’s in Paris. The auction house TAJAN has launched the Paris Precious Week on December 8, 2016 with a series of events ending with a prestigious auction dedicated to jewellery and watches, there will be 3 sessions following several days of exhibition. To know more about this auction, I met the in-house Expert, Mr. Jean-Norbert Salit in their private salons in Paris (37, rue des Mathurins). Jean Norbert Salit, you are the jewellery expert for Tajan, a large French auction house, how did you become an expert? Ever since I was a kid I knew that I wanted to work in Art! At the age of 18, I began spending time at Drouot Auction Sales and at age 23 I obtained my Diploma to the functions of Auctioneer. My life is made of encounters. I was lucky to meet Françoise Cailles, a great specialist of jeweller René Boivin, we were associates until the year 2000. I then joined …

Brigitte Pery & the legendary jewellery workshop

As part of the Paris Precious Week, the Tajan auction house hosted Brigitte Pery on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Descendant of the Pery dynasty of jewellers, Brigitte Pery was in charge of the family Maison for 4 decades. At times the history of the Maison has blended with the history of France and with the great names of the Place Vendôme… For those who have not attended the conference, here is what you need to know. The history of the Maison Pery begins in 1875 when Lucien Pery, then glover, decides to diversify and starts creating jewellery. It begins with the realisation of golden chains that he sells to the jewellers of the place Vendôme. Chaumet, Mauboussin, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels provide themselves at his workshop. Four generations succeed each other in the management of the Maison. Lucien, his son Albert and his grand son Bernard, the father of Brigitte Pery, they all perpetuate the traditions of excellence that made the fame of the jeweller. In the early 1900s, Albert Pery met with …

High Jewellery: the Couture Bow.

High Jewellery Week was full of ribbons and bows, a tribute to Couture Week. I loved the high jewellery collections presented during the Paris Couture Week. As you know, I’m crazy about bows and have been for some time, I created a bow ring for a Maison that specialises in engagement rings. There is no greater fan of ribbons and bows than I. This couture trend began at the SIHH 2017 with Maison Van Cleef & Arpels presenting two superb ribbon secret watches, one with diamonds and the other with a very nice gradient of pink sapphires and diamonds. My big favourite for this edition. Maison Chanel with its new collection Coco avant Chanel evokes the period of the great Gabrielle Chanel when she was a hatter and before she became the famous Coco Chanel. Couture and delicate, the bow and the camellia are reworked in the manner of the hatter handling perfectly flowers and ribbons. The use of pink stones like kunzite, spinel and sapphire together with pearls or moonstones reveals a softness and delicacy …

Van Cleef & Arpels

Here comes the 6th Encounter, with a jewellery Maison you are all acquainted to.Two years from now, I had devoted a fairly complete article about Van Cleef & Arpels at the occasion of its magnificent exhibition at the Paris Musée des Arts Décoratifs, I named it The art of jewellery, a must-see exhibition. Another one followed a year later Voyage in the land of the hands of gold related to the workshop visit and to the release of the brilliant book « Eloge de la main » («Praise the hand » in English) by Franco Cologni.
